Our Heritage
Nestled in the heart of downtown Newark, R&M Bakery stands as a beacon of tradition and community spirit. The story of R&M is woven through decades of dedication and love for the craft of baking, a journey that continues under the stewardship of Sam White, a Newark native who grew up embracing the bustling life of this vibrant town.
Sam, whose early dreams of outdoor adventures shifted towards a deeper connection with his community, first entered the bakery not as an owner but as a helping hand. His journey at R&M began in the 1990s, amidst the pressures of raising a young family and maintaining a full-time job. His passion for the bakery was evident when he volunteered his time, ensuring the bakery's doors stayed open, and its ovens warm, by crafting donuts in the wee hours before dawn and making timely deliveries.
A Legacy Preserved
The bakery, originally known as Hartshorn's and later acquired by Randy Miner in 1986, was rechristened R&M — a nod to Randy and his then-wife Misty. Sam's bond with Randy and the bakery only deepened over the years, a connection rooted in shared respect and commitment. In 2021, following Randy's passing, the opportunity arose for Sam to fulfill a longstanding dream. With his wife Kristi by his side, Sam took the helm in July 2023, promising to maintain the legacy and the name, keeping Randy's memory alive within the community.
Today, Sam and Kristi work tirelessly, with Kristi decorating cakes and managing the finances, while Sam, still the bakery's heart through his laughter and love for customer interaction, manages the team that keeps the bakery's legacy thriving. Together, they aim to carry forward the traditions of what has become the oldest bakery in Newark and perhaps Licking County.
Our Vision Forward
R&M Bakery, housed in a building over a century old that once served as a fire station, is more than just a place for sweet treats; it's a historical landmark. Through Sam and Kristi's commitment, R&M continues to serve as a community cornerstone, building on its history as Gleason’s Bakery, Wilson’s Bakery, and Hartshorn’s Bakery. Each owner has left their mark, and now Kristi and Sam intend to do the same, ensuring that the goodness they’ve come to love is preserved and passed on.
